Notre Dame Quarterback Situation Remains In Flux

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly still has not named a starting quarterback for this weekend, and that's just the sort of madness that can follow a loss to Cincinnati.

The options are Jack Coan, a Wisconsin transfer who started at the beginning of the season, and second-year freshman Drew Pyne and true freshman Tyler Buchner. It's basically been a QB carousel for the Fighting Irish, who visit Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Granted, Kelly said "the guys know" who will start at QB vs. the Hokies, but offered nothing specific beyond that.

"Going on the road in the environment we're in was a factor," Kelly told reporters. "Mobility is a bit of a factor. It needed to be evaluated. Then, certainly, grading out, I think, from our overall perspective, of the guys. Who gives us the best chance to win? This is still about winning football games. When we added all those things up, that's how we came up with a decision."

You could probably make a case for all three players, and David Cobb of CBS Sports does just that. As for Kelly, well, it appears he isn't saying until just before the kickoff at 7:30 p.m. EST.
