LSU Was Reportedly Prepared To Offer Jimbo Fisher A Massive Contract In November
If you still doubt the rumors that LSU badly wanted to hire Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher, well, think again.
The Action Network's Brett McMurphy is reporting that LSU was prepared to offer Fisher a massive 8-year, $125 deal in late November. That would carry an annual salary of $13 million, making Fisher the highest paid coach in college football by a wide margin.
Before the season began, Texas A&M committed its long-term future to Fisher. The 10-year, $75 million contract that Fisher signed in 2017 was extended another four years and brought his annual salary from $7.5 million to over $9 million. His new buyout is $95 million, the largest one given out to any coach in history, per USA Today.
In four seasons as Texas A&M's head coach, Fisher has a 34-14 record with zero double-digit win seasons. The Aggies went 8-4 in 2021, with a signature 41-38 win over No. 1 Alabama on Oct. 9.
Fisher, 56, has flirted with the idea of heading to Baton Rouge off and on since his time at FSU. Fisher's ties to LSU date back to his role as offensive coordinator for the Tigers from 2000-2006. He was the architect of an offense that contributed to LSU winning a National Championship in 2003.
As OutKick's Glenn Guilbeau reported in October, Fisher shot down any discussion of him taking the LSU job.
“It was a great place. It is one of the best, you know, best places,” Fisher said of LSU. “It’s a wonderful place. But I love being at A&M and I plan on being at A&M here and fulfilling my whole contract. I love everything about this place. And let me tell you something else. The way this place has embraced me and my family, including our Foundation, the way that people have embraced it, the way people have done everything here in College Station.
"I love everything about the people here – the administration and everybody in charge and the people who run this organization. I love it here.”
Fisher indeed stayed true to his word and remains in College Station. LSU, meanwhile, pivoted and hired Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly to fill its head coaching vacancy.
