Former Tennessee Vols Captain Passes Away At 37
Parys Haralson, a two-time Tennessee Volunteers captain and former NFL linebacker, passed away Monday at the age of 37. A cause of death was not immediately known, but news of the defender's untimely death reverberated throughout both college football and the NFL.
Haralson starred at Tennessee, tallying 21 career sacks and captaining the Vols football team over his final two seasons. After his time in Knoxville, Haralson moved onto the pros. He was selected by San Francisco in the sixth round of the 2006 draft, 140th overall.
Upon learning of his passing, the 49ers released a statement: "The 49ers are heartbroken and shocked by the news of Parys' tragic passing. Parys was a beloved member of our organization that lived life with an extraordinary amount of passion and joy, while leaving an indelible mark on everyone he came across. We extend our condolences to Parys' family and loved ones."
After seven seasons by the Bay, Haralson finished his career by playing two seasons with the Saints. Over nine seasons, Haralson complied 380 tackles, 28 sacks and three forced fumbles.
Former teammate Donte Witner was among the many who offered condolences via social media:
"R.I.P to my former teammate and Friend Parys Haralson aka P-Town. Praying for his family."
Haralson's 21 career sacks as a Volunteer still ranks sixth-best in Tennessee history. Following his senior season in 2005, he was named second-team All-SEC.
