Ex-Alabama QB Jay Barker Arrested For Aggravated Assault On Saturday

Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jay Barker, 49, was arrested early Saturday morning after purposefully attempting to hit another vehicle containing two passengers. Barker was arrested in Nashville and charged with "one count of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon," according to The Tennessean.

Bond was set at $10,000 and the retired quarterback was released around 7:30 p.m. (EST) after a "12-hour cooling period," due to the domestic nature of the incident.

Barker has been married to country singer Sara Evans since 2008. Evans was allegedly the target — alongside another passenger — that Barker attempted to hit with his vehicle. Despite their ongoing marriage, Evans and Barker are currently separated.

Barker allegedly spotted the two leaving a get-together at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. As they approached the driveway, Barker reversed his vehicle into the area and narrowly missed contact with the two. Reports and the police affidavit state that ill intent was taken from the incident.

After leaving Alabama as its winningest quarterback of all time with a 35-2-1 record, Barker declared for the 1995 NFL draft for a short-lived career that found more life in Canadian ball. He was also the receipt of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award in 1994 and led Bama to a 1993 Sugar Bowl victory over the No. 1 ranked Miami Hurricanes.

"The vehicle's occupants contacted police after Barker drove away from the home," the report noted. "Police made contact with Barker when he later drove by the house." He was booked at a county jail, according to the Davidson County Sheriff's office.

Barker is scheduled to appear in court in March.
