Deion Sanders A Prime Candidate For Big 12 Head Coaching Vacancy

Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders could be on his way to the Big 12.

Per 247Sports' Chris Hummer, "Coach Prime" is a candidate for the head coaching vacancy at TCU. Hummer mentions Nevada's Jay Norvell, Clemson's Tony Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys' Kellen Moore as other potential candidates.

Sanders, 54, became the head coach of Jackson State in 2020 after coaching at the high school level during the 2010s. Sanders took over a program that hadn't recorded a winning season since 2013. Sanders turned that around in the spring of 2020, going 4-3 in a pandemic shortened season, and has kept the momentum going in 2021, as Jackson State is 7-1 this season and in first place in the SWAC.

Sanders had been rumored to be in the mix for the head coaching vacancy at USC. That job seems to now be open to other suitors such as Baylor's Dave Aranda and Cincinnati's Luke Fickell.

The TCU job is open for the first time since 2000, when Gary Patterson took over for Dennis Franchione. Patterson brought the program to new heights, winning 10 or more games 11 times. Patterson and TCU mutually agreed to part ways on Sunday. Patterson amassed a 181-79 record and won the Big 12 in 2014.
