Could The Texas A&M QB Competition Extend Into The Season?

The Texas A&M Football team currently has one of its best quarterback competitions underway and will head into the fall season with six QBs on the roster.

But sophomore Zach Calzada and freshman Haynes King are going head-to-head to win the starting spot in 2021 and both have had playing time. To earn the starting role, each will have to play their best football, leaving no doubt behind that Jimbo Fisher made the right choice — can they get that done ahead of the season's start?

Gig Em Gazette's Jack Williams writes that if King was a clear outright starter, Fisher wouldn’t be toying around with Calzada for this long, but rather preparing his new starting quarterback to be the face of football in the state of Texas.

Calzada played in three games during his 2019 redshirt season where he went 4-for-9 with 38 passing yards in his collegiate debut against Texas State. King, on the other hand, played in two games his freshman season in 2020 where he made his collegiate debut at No. 2 Alabama, throwing a 17-yard pass and leading the team with 43 rushing yards on five attempts late in the game.

Both guys are talented, but the decision could be more difficult than anticipated for Jimbo, who is hosting his first quarterback competition in College Station.

Texas A&M kicks off its season in just 75 days — on Sept. 4 — against Kent State at Bryan-College Station.
