Texas Tech's Chris Beard Heading To Texas
Chris Beard is removing "Tech" from his title, but he will still remain a head coach in Texas.
According to Jeff Goodman of Stadium, Beard is leaving Texas Tech to replace Shaka Smart as the head hoops coach at Texas. Smart bolted for Marquette after the season.
While Beard has had a great deal of success at Texas Tech, this isn't necessarily a huge surprise. Texas is his alma mater.
The news of his move comes on the same day as his contract buyout to leave for another Big 12 team dropped from $5 million to $4 million, CBS Sports noted.
Beard led Texas Tech to a 112-55 record in five seasons, including three NCAA Tournament appearances in four years. The Red Raiders advanced all the way to the national championship game in 2019, when they lost to Virginia.
Texas finished 19-8 this past season, suffering an upset loss to in-state program Abilene Christian in the first round of the tourney.
