Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte signed a bill that put an end to same-day voter registration and that requires some residents to provide two forms of identification before voting. And now Democrats are suing.
“This afternoon, Montana’s Republican Governor signed two voter suppression bills into law. Tonight, on behalf of the @MTDems we sued,” election attorney Marc Elias said in a tweet.
Voter access and ease has become a hot topic that has created more division among the parties, with Republican sponsors of the Montana bills “arguing that the bills aren’t about making it harder for voters, but making the state’s election system even more secure and efficient,” CNN wrote.
