Nationals Pitcher Max Scherzer Awaiting Results From 'Groin' Tweak From Friday's Game
Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer is awaiting evalution Sunday for a what's being called a 'groin' tweak that forced him out of Friday's game against the San Francisco Giants.
Scherzer after the game was hopeful that it was just a minor injury and that his return would be a quick one.
“It’s really best-case scenario in terms of what the injury is and that I’m really day to day, and that this could subside pretty quickly here,” Scherzer said Friday evening.
The Nats pitcher was only able to throw 12 pitches proir to beinig pulled. He was up against Brandon Belt with a 2-2 count, and threw a pitch and jumped off the mound immediately upon completing his delivery.
He then met with trainer Paul Lessard, throwing one warmup pitch before leaving the game.
“Once I made that warmup pitch, I grabbed again in the same spot. So, it just wasn’t an injury that you could pitch through,” Scherzer said postgame.
“Now, fortunate enough, I got the MRI back and the good news is that it’s not a muscle strain. It’s just a little inflammation of the adductor, fascia of the adductor," Scherzer said Friday night.
Scherzer came into Friday's affair against the Giants sporting a 2.22 ERA and a 5-4 record over 12 starts, notably posting a 1.72 ERA in his last seven outings.
The Nats enter play Sunday 26-35, 8.5 games back of the first place New York Mets in the NL East. Losing Scherzer for any extended amount of time is going to be a serious dent in their chances to be in the playoff race as the first half continues.
