Dodgers-Brewers Thriller Shows Extra-Inning Rule Might Not Suck After All
The Brewers beat the Dodgers last night 6-5 in an extra-inning thriller, and it may have proven one thing: that new "runner-on-second" rule might not COMPLETELY suck.
Before the season, I wrote how Mickey Mouse it will look to start a runner at second base in extra innings, and I stand by that. No one should be on base who didn't earn their way on, but the new rule does create some drama. In this case, the Brewers were able to deliver a walk-off win and create more conversation during the regular season.
The key here: Regular season.
These type of rules exist to help preserve pitchers and maintain interest for the remainder of a series. I'm personally fine seeing this rule stick if it means postseason baseball remains untouched. And Dodgers fans can attest to the fact that their squad hasn't been able to score lately. The sudden change in rules allowed for some more confident and opportunistic at-bats, and it was entertaining.
Yes, I know it's different
All sports, not just baseball, need to be preserved. We can all agree on that. But baseball is also in the business of boosting ratings and obviously what they're doing now is working (at least somewhat).
I'm not here clamoring for the rule to stick. It's just been fun so far -- that's all.
