Cubs' Joc Pederson Scored A Waffle Iron After Homer, Here's Why
When the Chicago Cubs lose, they go down in fashion — and with waffle makers.
Joc Pederson came through on Wednesday with his first hit of the 2021 season. The newly acquired outfielder hit a home run, his first in a Cubs uniform, to get back on track after a 0-15 start to the season.
"It was huge," Pederson said. " grinded a little bit to start the season, just to kind of get the first one, especially in front of the fans and whatnot. I think it's a little bit more added pressure than normal. Yeah, it was a big relief."
Chicago's Ian Happ has been using the waffle maker as a celebratory piece in the dugout since 2018. The term "waffling" a pitch means making great contact with it, SportingNews.com reports.
But when Pederson returned to the dugout to celebrate, he was greeted with the usual routine ... and the breakfast appliance.
Pederson scored the run that would tie the game against the Brewers, but the Cubs ultimately lost.
The Cubs lost 4-2, but Pederson was appreciative of the gift. Pederson said he hopes the breakfast appliance gets passed around more this season.
"I hope we're making a lot of waffles," Pederson said, per SportsNews.com. "Hopefully we're passing out waffles soon to all of us."
