Minor League Pitcher Hospitalized, But In Stable Condition After Taking Scary Liner To Head

The Durham Bulls, the Triple-A minor league team that feeds into the Tampa Bay Rays, had a scary situation Thursday night. Starting pitcher Tyler Zombro was hit directly in the head by a line drive from Norkfolk batter Brett Cumberland.

According to Chris Lea with WRAL-TV in Raleigh, N.C., Zombro fell face-first following the hit and starting "convulsing on the ground." A stretcher was immediately brought out while players for both teams began to kneel and pray.

Here's video, but be warned, it may be disturbing.

Fortunately, an update was later given by the Tampa Bay Rays saying that Zombro is in the hospital, but he is in stable condition and undergoing further treatment.

"Tyler Zombro was transported to Duke University Hospital in Durham and is in stable condition," the statement read. "He is currently undergoing further treatment and observation. Additional updates will be provided as they become available. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tyler, his family and his teammates."

After going undrafted out of George Mason back in 2017, Zombro signed with the Rays as a minor league free agent. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, this was his ninth game with the Bulls in 2021.

Let's hope for a full and speedy recovery.
