Michael Jordan and Nike Donating $100 Million to Social Justice Causes

This afternoon, Michael Jordan's longtime spokesperson announced that MJ and Nike's Jordan Brand would be teaming up to donate $100 million over 10 years to racial equality and social justice causes:




It would be interesting to find out the split between Jordan and Nike here. Nevertheless, this donation and accompanying statement are noteworthy because Jordan famously said "Republicans buy sneakers too" -- and finally admitted to having said so in the Last Dance documentary. Throughout his career, he shunned affiliation with activist causes. The most prevalent example was that he declined to endorse Harvey Gantt in a 1990 North Carolina senate race against the segregationist Jesse Helms.
