USFL Names Its First Four Head Coaches, Spring Football Set To Start In April

The United States Football League is getting a reboot in 2022, with plans for a season start in April as Fox Sports revives the spring league to treat fans to year-round football.

On Thursday, the USFL unveiled its first four names to join the upcoming season as head coaches.

As reported by Fox Sports, "The list includes Kevin Sumlin (Houston Gamblers), Mike Riley (New Jersey Generals), Todd Haley (Tampa Bay Bandits) and Bart Andrus (Philadelphia Stars)."

Pitting eight teams against each other in a two-division split, the USFL will see the North and South face off in a 10-game season. Teams will be comprised of 38 players per roster.

The League is scheduled to hold a player selection meeting between Feb. 21-22, progressing toward starting offseason camps on Mar. 21 and broadcasting their first game on Apr. 16. Once the season begins, all games will be held at a single venue that has yet to be announced.

The USFL was originally launched in 1983 and gave life to the careers of NFL legends such as Steve Young, Doug Flutie and Jim Kelly in its three-year run.

While the new season brings on a different iteration of the league from the 1980s, a strong market for football in the modern day should make its shot at success worth monitoring.

USFL President of Football Operations, Brian Woods, commented on the league's progress heading into its first season.

"Today is a monumental day for the new USFL as we hit the 100 days to kickoff mark. To attract Mike Riley and Todd Haley, two former NFL head coaches, Bart Andrus, a former head coach in NFL Europe and CFL, plus an experienced college head coach in Kevin Sumlin, to the USFL, speaks to the quality of the league we're building.

"They all share our belief in high-quality spring football, and we're honored to have them lead their respective teams this year. We can't wait to hit the field!"
