McDonald's Is Finally Working On Upgrading Their Chicken Sandwich

As a lifelong fast foodie, I've always maintained that McDonald's is actually underrated. The fact that you can get a Big Mac, fries, and a Coke all over the planet and know exactly what it's going to be is both astounding and supremely comforting.

However, an area that has frankly been a blemish for the golden arches is their chicken sandwich. The McChicken has never really done it for me. They've had premium offerings over the years, like the buttermilk crispy chicken bacon clubhouse sandwich, that are fine but no one really lies awake salivating over.

Thankfully, it sounds like McDonald's is working on a new chicken sandwich. "We’re certainly working on ways that we can update and upgrade our chicken offering in the U.S.," McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said in an interview with TIME. "Suffice to say we will continue to be competing and innovating in chicken. And I’m sure we’ll continue to be getting critiques about how we’re doing."

In the interview, Kempczinski noted that consumption patterns are trending towards chicken from beef. McDonald's trails pretty squarely behind Chick-fil-A, Popeye's, and even Wendy's in the chicken sandwich department. I'll believe McDonald's can muster up a spicy chicken sandwich on those levels when I see it, but I'll give them the chance to execute on the development.
