Madonna Dumps Out New Instagram Content, Skip’s An Emotional Mess & Clay’s Kids Win Beach Football Game

I’m back to cloudy, dreary Ohio and ready to pump out a full day of content

The Florida trip ended last night the minute I stepped off the plane at DTW and felt that Pure Michigan freeze-your-balls-off air that hit me like a ton of bricks. I think it’s safe to say I’m to that age where I’m beginning to need multiple Florida, or some other warm-weather trips, in my life on a yearly basis.

In the past, it was just nice to get some warm weather. Now I NEED it.

Thursday, we packed the kids into my mom’s Prius — perfect parents loaner car, by the way — and headed out to Indian Rocks Beach to throw the frisbee and wade in the Gulf before Thanksgiving dinner. Let me be perfectly clear…I may never go back to doing Thanksgiving any other way. Screw sitting in the rain and clouds up here in northern Ohio. Screw sitting around on the couch watching the Lions figure out a way to let Andy Dalton look like Joe Montana circa 1989 en route to a game-winning field goal.

Yes, it was amazing to be in Florida this week, but now it’s time to get back to the garbage weather so I can get ultra-focused on the end of the college football season. There’s zero chance I could stay focused on 10 hours of football when it’s 75 and sunny in Florida. 33, cloudy and shitty keeps me grounded, in the basement, and completely focused on a packed weekend of college football that gets rolling today with 16 games, including a noon Boise State-San Diego State game. Imagine how fired up people are for a 9 a.m. Black Friday kickoff in San Diego.

Random trip observations:

  1. The meat missiles at Disney’s Cosmic Cafe are a sight to behold. Absolute rockets
  2. Delta did a great job pulling the clearly drugged-up homeless-looking dude off the Tampa to Atlanta flight. I have to believe his family bought him a ticket to come home for Thanksgiving. That’s the only explanation because he appeared to belong to the streets
  3. My mom even had sand toys in the Prius for the kids. Mom really went above and beyond on this trip to think of the little things, including picking out left-handed clubs out of the golf course starter’s shack for me to use during Tuesday’s 9-hole round. I’m right-handed!
  4. Florida needs more strip malls and business signs
  5. You could finish a book a day sitting at Florida intersections
  6. Shoutout to the meltdown gods for taking a few days off. Our 4-year-old had a strong trip where the only thing he wanted to buy were gummy bears at the airport. Zero trinkets returned home with us. That’s a miracle.

• Since it’s a big shopping day, don’t forget to finish your Christmas shopping early by snapping up TNML gear for dad, your uncles, aunts, cousins, etc. Buy! Buy! Buy! It’s the present dads really want this year. And then spend five minutes explaining the league and your dad will be hooked mentally and physically. He wants a challenge in his life. He wants to be part of a community. Trust me, I hear from all the dads who swear by the TNML.

• Beau in Toledo sent a Thanksgiving message late Thursday:

Yes, I mowed today…

MOWED DOWN 2 PLATES OF THANKSGIVING DINNER!!

• Beau in Toledo’s brother, Andrew in Toledo (I think, he didn’t specify his location), had himself a feast. Look at this cooking operation:

Beau’s brother Andrew here, attached a few pictures of the turkeys we did on the spit today for Thanksgiving.  Regularly basted with copious amounts of garlic butter, they’re delicious.

Hope all is well and have a great Thanksgiving!!

• Steve E. from Oregon writes:

I had to laugh when I read about all the Disney stuff in Screencaps, because I’ve been down in Orlando at Disney for the past week (heading home to Oregon tomorrow). I was staying in Davenport, so I did that I-4 drive the other way every day, but it sucked just as bad.

• Indy Daryl stopped by with a Thanksgiving report:

Happy Thanksgiving from Ormond Beach, FL! I hope you have a joy-filled day with loads of turkey, side dishes, conversation, family, and most of all pie.

In thinking about things I am thankful for, I want to echo the scores of other readers who appreciate your commitment to pumping out quality content on a daily basis. Giving us an inside view into your life and allowing space for your readers to engage has been such a breath of fresh air.

Similarly, I can’t thank you enough for giving me the time and space to post 3,000 words on mowing. It was a delight to write such an essay and to have your support means the world to me.

Keep up the great work, have a great rest of your time in Florida, enjoy OSU vs. Michigan, and know that I am repping TMNL at Thanksgiving dinner!

• Sean K. has some Thanksgiving week thoughts and he’s now a fan of Mike in Pasadena who went on an exotic wood buying trip:

As always, thanks for what you do Joe: Screencaps is indeed for the ‘average joe’ and I am particularly thankful to consider myself included among the Screencaps community.

Loved reading the ‘what we’re thankful for’ missives on Thanksgiving.

Though I am a day late, I’m thankful for many of the same things expressed by everyone writing in: my family, friends, neighbors, and of course, the privilege of living in America where we help each other out, share garage beers and can talk about whatever we want and go wherever we want in this great country whenever we feel like it.

But that freedom isn’t free and it also takes a LOT of elbow grease to maintain. So in particular my thanks go out to our military servicemen and women, police officers, firefighters, truck drivers, plumbers, home builders, construction workers, electricians, and the garbage truck crews — who are the busiest folks post thanksgiving and who are so often taken for granted.

It’s the hard-working blue-collar types who keep this country running: I work hard to never forget that and realize I am so lucky to live in a nation powered by their sweat.

Finally, loved the shout-out to the ‘rare lumber’ dude heading to Europe to buy unique wood types. If you have an hour to spare, check out the documentary below on YouTube – ‘Masters of Resonance.’ It delves into the woodcraft required to make drum kits — and how wood from a 1,500-year-old black oak tree preserved in the bottom of a European river ended up as a drum kit for Neil Peart, the late great drummer for Rush. As always, thanks for what you do!

And that should do it around here. It’s time to get this day rolling. Thoughts and prayers to the plumbers out there who have a real battle on their hands today. Shoutout to my wife who’s in bed trying to recover from four days of travel. Good luck to all the retail workers who’re putting in 16-hour days.

Let’s have a strong Black Friday and enjoy a massive weekend of pigskin.
