Kansas May Join Big 12 Defections, Head To Big Ten

Texas and Oklahoma apparently aren't the only ones about ready to bolt the Big 12. It seems Kansas also has one foot out the door.

According to multiple reports, Kansas has set up a conference call with the Big Ten to discuss the possibility of entering the conference.

Without Texas and Oklahoma, who are reportedly bolting for the SEC, the Big 12 may not be around much longer. Those two programs were founding members. A decision by Kansas to leave would likely just be the start of a mass exodus from one of college football's Power Five conferences.

Of course, Kansas has never been a football school. The Jayhawks have made their name in hoops, which is why this would be a big deal if they were to join the Big Ten.

"Schools like Kansas and Iowa State are going to be popular given their geographical location and footprint relative to Big Ten country," wrote Anthony Broome of SB Nation. "Notre Dame already has one foot in the door with the ACC, so that still feels unlikely. There is a lot to sort out and a lot of decisions and pitches to be made, so it is tough to even speculate on what the future might be."

Kansas finished 0-9 in football last season under coach Les Miles, so you can be sure the school would be welcomed with open arms by everyone else in the Big Ten from that standpoint. (Miles has since been replaced by Lance Leipold, formerly of Buffalo.)

Basketball-wise, the Jayhawks are a traditional power and would undoubtedly be among the Big Ten favorites on a yearly basis. They typically enter the season as a top-five team. Without question, the Big Ten would get a boost from their presence.

Interestingly, unlike every school in the Big Ten, Kansas does not offering wrestling -- but that's hardly viewed as a sticking point.

Texas, Oklahoma, and now perhaps Kansas. Does the Big 12 stand a chance? It sure doesn't feel like it.
