Jaguars’ Urban Meyer Doesn’t Bite On Trevor Lawrence Speculation

Videos by OutKick

Urban Meyer is now the high-profile head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he left the door open for his new team to pass on the highest-profile quarterback entering the 2021 NFL Draft.

Because of their 1-15 finish, the Jaguars have the No. 1 overall pick, and the entire sports-loving universe expects them to take Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. And let’s be real clear here — they will take Lawrence.

But Meyer apparently felt obligated to mention a few others when the subject was broached during his introductory press conference.

“Well you see Trevor, you see Justin (Fields), you see Zach (Wilson),” Meyer said. “You know, this is going to be, as (Jaguars owner Shad Khan), this is a monumental moment for this franchise. And we’ve seen some franchises explode, and we’ve seen others fail.”

In other words, Meyer is trying to trick people into believing the QB-starved Jags are keeping their options open. But at least he admitted a QB is indeed the focus.

“I’ve said this many times throughout my career, is that when the NFL says it’s a quarterback league, I would say, ‘Well so is college. And so is high school. So is Pop Warner. It’s a quarterback sport,'” Meyer said. “So whoever takes that snap, we’ve got to be right on.”

  1. I’ll pretty sure Fields transferred from Georgia after Urban was already gone. Regardless, I wouldn’t say he has a great eye for quarterbacks that do well in the NFL anyway (Tebow and Haskins come to mind), so you never know who he’ll try to get.

    • That’s a great point Brian. I could see Urban bringing in Tebow to be a part of his staff for the simple reason being Tebow is from Jacksonville and is a legend in Florida. Considering sports is a business now, what better way to bring more fans to the stadium than the trifecta of Urban Meyer, Trevor Lawrence and Tim Tebow! Cha-ching

  2. I’d like to see the Jags be competitive at least for a few years, with the Bucs having Brady and the Dolphins looking up it’s a good time for FL football.
