Is 'Guardians' Set To Become The New Nickname For the Cleveland MLB Franchise?

Fans of the Cleveland Indians will enjoy their nickname for one more season in 2021, but after that, the team will don a new name starting in 2022.

There have been rumors of what nickname the organization will go with following 2021. Right now, the odds are on the "Spiders" and "Cleveland Baseball Team."

The third place odds-on favorite is one that seems to be gaining momentum: the "Cleveland Guardians."

The "Guardians" nickname does have a connection to Cleveland, as there are "guardian" statues on a bridge entering downtown Cleveland

Today, Alan Bell of CBS Sports Line tweeted out a discovery that could point to "Guardians" being the new name for the franchise: the filing for a trademark of the "Guardians".

That the application was filed for "entertainment in the nature of baseball games" seems to be a dead giveaway that it will for sure be the new name for the franchise.

Before you go creating "Cleveland Guardians" shirts and hats though, remember that, before it's official, the franchise could trademark a number of names just so they have options.

Still, "Guardians" is a much better nickname than "Spiders" and "Cleveland Baseball Team."
