Hall of Famer Hank Aaron Dies At 86

One of the all-time greats has passed away. CBS 46 out of Atlanta reports that Braves legend and Hall of Famer Henry Louis “Hank” Aaron passed away this morning at the age of 86.

Best known as one of the great sluggers in baseball history, Aaron overtook Babe Ruth on April 8th 1974, hitting his 715 home run on a 1-0 pitch from Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Al Downing.

Born in Mobile, Alabama in 1934, Aaron made his Major League debut at the age of 20, and played all 23 years of his career with the Braves, starting in Milwaukee and then Atlanta.

Aaron won the MVP award in his fourth season, hitting 44 homers and driving in 132 runs. Starting in 1957, he hit 25 homers in each season until 1973.

Even today "Hammerin'" Hank is known as one of the best hitters in the game. He leads in runs batted in with 2,297 and total bases with 6,856.

His 755 homers stood in the record books until Barry Bonds overtook him with 762 home runs.

Aaron was selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in 1982.
