Former Patriots Star Doesn't Believe Bill Belichick Talk Of A Quarterback Competition

Last week, Bill Belichick gave very Bill Belichick quotes about there being a quarterback competition. He said things like it was like "all other spots on the team" and "I can't control how players perform" and "We’ll give everybody an opportunity and see what happens."

One of his star former players, Willie McGinest, doesn't believe him.

"Well they say it's a competition, but if you're asking my opinion, I expect to see Cam Newton starting at the quarterback position," McGinest said on WEEI's Dale & Keefe. "If he's healthy, he's the guy."

Former Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia is on a similar wavelength to McGinest. “I think he has a huge edge, because of what he’s done in the league," Scarnecchia said. "The guy was an MVP . We played against him a number of times, have a huge respect for him as a player and leader, and the things he’s done. This guy, from a skill set, a lot different from guys we’ve had in there at quarterback over the years.”

Compounded with the transition from Tom Brady, eight Patriots have opted out of this season. There aren't really anymore superlatives you can throw around about Bill Belichick, who is already the greatest NFL head coach in history (and I say this as a Packers fan who fervently believes in the ghost of Vince Lombardi), but if he can win the AFC East with this team you just have to tip your cap to him once again.
