It’s just been assumed that Jalen Hurts will start at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles next season.
But don’t you dare make assumptions, says new Eagles coach Nick Sirianni.
“To name any starters at this particular time… We’ve been working with these guys for two days, right?” Sirianni told reporters. “We’ve been working with these guys for two days and my biggest thing is competition.”
Last month, NFL insider Chris Mortenson said the Eagles didn’t intend to bring in any competition for Hurts. That may indeed be the case. That is actually likely the case. Just don’t mention that idea to Sirianni.
“(Competition) is my second core value — it’s this team’s second core value,” Sirianni said. “Competition is a huge thing, and we’re going to have competition at every position.”
Hurts became the Eagles QB of the Future last season under former coach Doug Pederson when he replaced Carson Wentz, who has since been traded. The Eagles then brought in veteran Joe Flacco, though it hardly seems likely that Flacco will start.
So maybe Hurts does indeed have some “competition”? Nah, not really.
He’ll be the starter.
