Donald Trump: Big Ten Football Looking ‘Really Good’

Videos by OutKick

President Donald Trump, who had a productive phone conversation with Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren earlier this week, tweeted about Big Ten football today:

There are some follow-up questions or observations from my end:

1) Does Northwestern count with Illinois? It’s obviously located in the state, but as the lone private school in the conference it’s not really up to Governor JB Pritzker whether or not they play.

2) I’m assuming Michigan and Michigan State are tethered together here? Michigan’s program is in much better shape right now after Mark Dantonio left a mess behind at Michigan State in February. However, Michigan’s president Dr. Mark Schlissel has been said to be an impediment to return to play. Perhaps these schools could have a better chance at playing football this Fall after Governor Gretchen Whitmer reversed course and is now allowing high school sports, including football. It’s super hard to see the conference moving forward with the season without Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines.

3) Maryland has a Republican governor in Larry Hogan. It’s a little surprising to see them listed in the states President Trump is chiding here. It’s also a little surprising not to see Rutgers included in this list, as there’s been no indication that they are itching to play.

4) It’s also interesting that Wisconsin and Penn State aren’t listed as no’s here. They both have Democrat governors and both schools voted to postpone the Fall season; however, both states are playing high school football and they are both top 15 programs in the country. It’d be a good sign for return to play if they’re both on board.

Hopefully we can get more clarity on all this in the coming days.

  1. CT and Michigan pretty much swapping out on the HS football decisions. Would be nice to get an updated count from the Republican vs Democrat states playing HS football!

CT allowing soccer and volleyball, but Football is just too dangerous. Science.

  2. No one has a grip on Minnesota, eh?
No high school football, no college football, dictator Democrat governor, but… lots of momentum for Gopher football, since they’re actually pretty good now.
That being said, I could definitely see a “No” vote from Tim Jong Walz.
