The NFL Draft held in Cleveland this year is just 34 days away, and on Friday, the entire landscape of the draft shifted with one major trade.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the deal is done – Miami is sending the 3rd overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers for the 12th pick.
That’s just the start.
The Dolphins will not only get the Niners’ 12th pick, they also score a 2021 third-round pick (SF’s comp pick for Robert Saleh hiring) and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023.
The Niners almost certainly made the move so that they can draft a quarterback at the end of April, but as Schefter stated, the “49ers, now square in the QB mix…are holding on to Jimmy Garoppolo and have no plans to trade him, per sources.”
Garoppolo’s name has been brought up a number of times as a player who might be moved via a trade, and one team that would love to get him back is his old team, the New England Patriots.
Since the Niners will most likely draft a QB, a deal that sends Garoppolo back to the Pats totally makes sense. In such a deal, the Niners would likely try and recoup some of the picks they just gave over to the Dolphins.
If the 49ers get the quarterback they want, Garoppolo can be expendable right away, and despite the Pats bringing back Cam Newton, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see them play ‘Let’s Make a Deal’ around the draft.
