Detroit Free Press reporter Marlowe Alter, who wrote a piece Friday on Lions coaching candidate Dan Campbell’s comments during a 1998 Texas A&M pep rally where the then senior reportedly said he was proud to attend a school where “men like women and women like men,” ended up on the defensive after a slew of his offensive tweets were unearthed.
“I love walking all the way to Ping to be turned away cause I’m not taking fag summer classes,” Alter tweeted way back in 2012.
“What the f–k is a Michigan man brah? Oh a hugggggge fag :),” Marlowe wrote on another of his vintage tweets. ”
Alter, who painted Campbell a homophobe over his 1998 comments, failed to mention his truly homophobic tweets. It’s quite a shame when such a Twitter trail is left behind. Just kidding, it’s great because it exposes the frauds.
Now, as you guys know, OutKick doesn’t believe in outing people to play gotcha and have them fired over tweets. Nobody should be firing Alter or trying to prevent Campbell from getting a job. The human resource executives can sit this one out.
It would just be nice if Alter acknowledged his own past in his report on Campbell. All it would take is a brief passage at the bottom of the story where Alter says, “On more than one occasion, I have used ‘fag’ on social media.”
That’s it. Just be fair and balanced, Marlowe.
“I apologize for the unacceptable tweets from my past. There is no excuse for the language I used and I’m embarrassed. I do not condone that language. I’m sorry to anyone I have offended and deeply regret my actions,” Marlowe tweeted Friday night.
Now we need to hear from Marlowe on if he thinks Campbell should be disqualified from the Lions job. Go ahead Marlowe, say it.

When people are younger, they do things.
If camera phones would have been around when I was in high school….
It sucks to live as a young person in today’s world.
Wokeness annoys, hypocrisy infuriates.
You are correct Z. We see it all the time these days and I feel like I’m living in a bizarro world sometimes. The nerve (and stupidity) of this guy to bring this up is infuriating. This idiot reporter wrote the article just as Campbell is looking for a job and that makes this idiot reporter a piece of shit. Meanwhile the idiot reporter has some similar language documented in his past…surprise, surprise. I’ve seen this all year coming from one side of the political aisle.
Justice still exists. May the canceller become the cancel-ee.
May Cancel culture in general be Cancelled. I remember an old commercial that I believe was Geico that said “We all do dumb things”. People change as they get older. What you believe today, may not be what you believed 10 years ago, or 10 years from now. If you are going to hold something against someone, it should at least have to be in the last year or two.
no shit bro
this “tweet audit” of every person who gets a job is ridiculous
omg Dan Campbell said a toxic masculinity manly thing before a division 1 football game ! Call the presses !
I grew up playing smear the queer when I was 7 years old … I guess me and my buddies should all be cancelled for being so insensitive.
Never thought that I would hear that again! No problem though.
Yes indeed. Played that game from about 3rd grade through 10th and I am only 43 so not that long ago. I also concur with TigerMan in that I don’t care what someone tweeted at any point in their life before the age of 25 or so. Even after that point, if that’s what you feel, then so be it. Far be it from me to call someone out for their belief system. Everyone is on different paths in this thing called life. Some become mature faster than others. I still do dumb things all the time.
these fucking articles on Outkick crack me up. I liked Clay for his covid analysis, and his 1st amendment and b00bs schtick from a few years ago, and once Whitlock came over (surprise surprise he flaked out on something again) I gave my $99 … but this shit will have me end my renewal. “We at Outkick would never post an article trying to cancel someone” — as you post an article trying to cancel someone. Just like the democrats being amazingly hypocritical about the “insurrection”, this article is nothing but blatant hypocrisy that does NOTHING but encourage cancel culture. Do not pretend you are better than them when you are them, guy.
Excellent post.
I’ll be joining you in the VIP “One and Done” category.
Very disappointed over the recent developments on the site and the reporting trends.
NEW YORK TIMES and Huffington await you. Their offering a Bogo on soy milk with every sign up
I’d say we need to see what develops. Right now there is no value added for being a VIP. I joined because I thought it was important work especially the articles Whitlock was putting out but…. you’d think we could at least get an ad free site.
Do you want me to start a Go Fund Me for your poor soul
Uh, he’s pointing out the hypocrisy dude. Buh bye.
Where does Joe want the Detroit writer to be cancelled?
Really? Joe made it clear that no one should be fired. Further, OK didn’t out anyone. Neville the Cat and Twitter outed him. OK just shared the hilarious story with us. I really like Kinsey’s style of writing. Very tongue in cheek.
and for the record, as a 35 year old that is LITERALLY the first generation of the internet (as in, I grew up on the internet, embraced social media before social media on dark alley message boards with teenagers putting high school on the internet before facebook) … anything I said in 1999 or 2004 or 2006 before realizing the internet archives forever should never be held against me. 1) I was a teenager. 2) Nobody fucking knew the internet was going to haunt you for the rest of your life when we were dialing up to AOL.
Just give it a break. I don’t want to read homo tweets from 2012 in 2021. Who gives a shit. It is called “progression.” We continue to progress as a society. Shocking, I know. You can’t say fag on the internet anymore, duh. We didn’t know that in 2005. Just like we used to have Negro League Baseball. We grow and learn as a society and progress, no different on the internet.
Cancel the cancellers. I disagree. This man needs fired. Until that standard is held it won’t end. Once that standard is held the cancelling will end and we can get back to normal life.
I wouldn’t disagree with you, at all. Until the consequences are applied to the canceler, this crap is never going to stop.
It all comes down to politics. It trumps everything, no pun intended, and all pun intended. If one is a card carrying DNC member all wrongs can be forgiven. If one, however, is a GOP member, or Civil Lib, or anything other than bowing down to the CCP er DNC, the slightest of slights will be used against you forever until you beg for forgiveness and swear your allegiance to the woke altar. I hope people are paying attention.
Offensive language is a one way street. No need to elaborate.
Bwahahaha, the internet is forever, woke loser. His posts disqualify him from criticizing Campbell for this at minimum. Self-awareness is not a feature among woke leftists .
‘Men like women and women like men’ is a homophobic statement now? Sounds like the homo journalists are heterophobic to me.
Welcome to the world of new-think
Agreed. There is a groundswell of people in the minority communities who believe the liberal media is all about the feminization of cultures, especially the black culture. There is nothing scarier to say Bernie Sanders or Pete Buttigieg than a strong black male figure. To your point, science is science, men are supposed to like women and women men that’s how we keep populating this planet.
There’s nothing scarier to any emasculated, effeminate or gay man than a masculine man. I think part of the racism agenda is to mask over that. Masculine men don’t care about your skin suit…they care if you productive to society or not.
Agreed 100%.
We really need “like” buttons. There are several comments here worthy of a like….
Like.
Cancel culture is ignorant. Canceling for prejudices as teenagers / young 20s is beyond ignorant. People at those ages are reverberating what their parents taught them. Let’s not disregard that this was ’98. Around ’06, TIm Hardaway made true homophobic remarks, not slang. Yet, the majority of people on the message board I most frequented were praising Hardaway.
That “journalist’ posted his remarks in 2011 smack dab in the middle of our country’s awakening (the era of the O) probably while he was working or studying journalism. Sounds like he is hater in woke’s clothing….
BTW, based on the article the hater wrote, it seems like the college football player Campbell got his ass handed to him. Hopefully the Hater gets the same:
“Now we need to hear from Marlowe on if he thinks Campbell should be disqualified from the Lions job. Go ahead Marlowe, say it.”
It was a jab at UT-Austin on the last Bonfire. Definitely riled up Longhorn and an easily drew them offsides prior to the game. Couldn’t do that today obviously
