Legendary Taylor Sheridan Movie Is Getting A Sequel, But There Might Be Big Problems

A "Wind River" sequel is on the way, but don't expect it to be much like the original.

The 2017 film from Taylor Sheridan starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen was easily the best movie of the year it was released, and didn't get nearly the respect it deserved.

The incredibly dark drama followed the search for truth after a young Native American woman was found murdered on the Wind River Indian Reservation.

There was nothing to smile about in the film from the "Yellowstone" creator. It's one of the darkest movies in recent memory, and it's downright bone-chilling. Yet, it was so good that I saw it in theaters three times. Yes, I saw "Wind River" in theaters three times. I enjoyed watching the mystery get pulled apart that much.

Now, a new movie is on the way, but it's going to be missing some major pieces.

"Wind River" sequel is being made.

A sequel titled "Wind River: The Next Chapter" is being made and it "centers around the collaboration between the FBI and a United States Fish & Game tracker to solve a series of ritualistic murders," according to ScreenRant.com.

However, don't expect to see many familiar faces. ScreenRant reported that only Gil Birmingham and Martin Sensmeier will reprise their roles. Jason Clarke, Scott Eastwood and "True Detective" season four star Kali Reis are also in the cast of the sequel. However, Sheridan, Renner and Olsen are not involved in any way.

That last part is what concerns me. "Wind River" was so amazing because of the incredible performances from Renner and Olsen, and it all stemmed from Sheridan's vision.

Can "Wind River: The Next Chapter" live up to expectations if all the main pieces are gone? It seems very unlikely that can happen. All the major star power has been removed, and that alone is reason to be concerned.

Having said that, Jason Clarke and Scott Eastwood are solid and Kali Reis had her moments in "True Detective: Night Country." The plot also sounds very engaging and something straight out of the "True Detective" universe.

So, there's definitely some indications it could be worth watching. I just wonder how it shakes out with Sheridan not guiding the way.

There's no release date for "Wind River: The Next Chapter," and I'll do my best to watch it with an open mind. I'm just skeptical. Let me know what you think at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
