'The Dynasty' Captures Rare Moments That Built The Patriots Legend: Non-Spoiler Review, Episode Preview

Sports documentaries about dynasties don't often have much to add. AppleTV+'s "The Dynasty: New England Patriots" does, retelling a familiar story about the New England Patriots with a focus on the intimate details that made the improbable dynasty possible.

Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft and Tom Brady's championship run in Foxboro will be etched in NFL history as the premier dynasty unless Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have anything to say about that. For now, it's all Pats.

"The Dynasty" director Matthew Hamachek spoke about the project with OutKick, sharing intimate details about interacting with more than 70 Patriots personnel and handling a new approach to a familiar team.

While the Patriots' story warrants no ‘spoiler alert,' the series does unwrap never-before-seen material, pulled from the hours of footage granted to Hamachek and his team.

With episodes five and six slated for release this week, we will mostly address material from episodes 1 to 4, with a special sneak preview of Episodes 5 and 6, titled "Torn" and "At All Costs."

WATCH THE EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW:

Matthew Hamachek's second directorial project comes after his 2021 documentary "Tiger," centered on the famous Tiger Woods.

When handling a seminal figure and team, audiences figure that their knowledge supersedes anything a new project may have to say.

What "The Dynasty" gets incredibly on-point is the emphasis on "team." From the moment Drew Bledsoe went down with an injury on Sept. 21, 2001, to allow newcomer Tom Brady to commence his legacy to the SpyGate allegations, which ailed the New England dynasty's reputation in the late aughts.

Hamachek attested to the team dynamic still present among famed Patriots players highlighted when sitting down for the project. Guys like Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel and Willie McGinest held the team together in the transitional period from Bledsoe to Brady.

"These guys understood the strength of putting the team first, which caters to the vision Robert Kraft wanted from his team," Hamachek said, crediting the early-day Patriots for keeping a strong foundation through outside noise. "Keeping the locker room together became an unspoken strength for New England."

Patriots owner Robert Kraft justifies his decision to separate with championship coach Bill Parcells in Episode 2 (titled "Snow Day," chronicling the famous "Tuck Rule" game against the Raiders). What Kraft sought was a ‘team-first’ coach, pivoting to Bill Belichick as the new Patriots HC in 2000.

Belichick's stern remembrance of topics like SpyGate is showcased in the series.

Hamachek spoke on the balance of engaging with Belichick to get the full retelling of the Patriots' dynasty without stepping on the land mines of controversy.

"We were able to see multitudes of Bill. There are certainly cooler sides to Bill; you remember him laughing with Randy Moss as Mass was in the club and Bill was trying to recruit the player."

With ex-Patriots quarterback Tom Brady expected to take the broadcasters booth for FOX in 2024, we asked Hamachek if he saw the potential for Brady the Commentator after intimately speaking with Brady the Quarterback.

"People can doubt Tom Brady all they want; as we've seen time and time again, Tom embraces the process that makes him great and applies it to anything."

Expect great things from Brady moving forward, says Hamachek.

And after watching "The Dynasty," which is certainly worth your time, expect great things from Hamachek.

Tune in on Friday, March 1 as AppleTV+ releases the next two episodes of "The Dynasty" as the focus shifts to the Patriots' connection to former tight end Aaron Hernandez.
