Surfer Captures Insane Video Of Hammerhead Shark Right Underneath His Board

Matt Reynolds spotted a hammerhead shark gliding beneath his board mid-wave and somehow managed to stay upright in a wild moment caught on camera.

Surfers are some of the bravest people in the world. Or the craziest.

These folks paddle out into the open ocean every day armed with nothing but a wetsuit and a fiberglass-coated foam board — fully aware of the murder fish lurking beneath them. And it feels like every few weeks, there's another story about a shark encounter that makes you question why anyone would sign up for that.

Well, here's your latest example.

Matt Reynolds, a 56-year-old surfer from O’ahu, Hawaii, was in the middle of riding a wave off Honolulu when he looked down and saw a massive shadow gliding just below him.

A hammerhead shark.

His 360 camera captured the moment in crystal-clear water — including the instant he realized exactly what he was dealing with. The reaction says it all.

"I was startled by a large shadow below me and I immediately knew it was a hammerhead shark as the water was so clear," Reynolds said.

The shark, estimated to be around 8 feet long, passed directly beneath his board as he continued riding the wave.

Fortunately, he managed not to completely freak out. Which — I'd imagine — is easier said than done in this particular situation.

"I tried my hardest to not panic so I wouldn't fall," he said.

Reynolds managed to finish the wave, made it back to the channel and got picked up by a jet ski. That was enough for the day.

"It was a scary moment as I haven’t seen one this big," he said.

Even for someone who's spent plenty of time in the ocean, this one stood out.

"I have seen large marine life many times, whales, turtles, sharks, but this is my first time capturing a shark with such clarity."

The footage is raking in views online. But for Reynolds, it's not just viral content.

"It was a moment I will never forget."

And for the rest of us? Just another reminder that the ocean is very much not our territory.
