Reddit Users Reveal How'd They Spend A $1 Million Inheritance, And Some Answers Are Wild

How would you spend a massive inheritance if you couldn't spend it on yourself?

That's the question Reddit is currently debating, and some of the answers are pretty interesting. As OutKick readers know, I'm a huge Reddit fan.

I find myself going down rabbit holes on the site all the time. You simply never have any idea what you're going to find.

That leads us to a fun one today.

Reddit users debate how they'd blow through a $1 million inheritance.

A Reddit thread titled "You've inherited one million dollars but you're only allowed to spend it on other people. What are you going to do first?" recently popped up, and people are certainly having a lot of fun with it.

The premise is very simple. What do you do with the money if you can't spend it on yourself? Dive into a few of the answers below, and hit me with your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.

  • My husband just got a shiny new house!
  • Retire my parents. they deserve it
  • Change my name to "Other People"
  • Buy my other half a house for her to live in then spontaneously move in the same day.
  • Dad. Gotta buy him a lakeside mansion.
  • I would spend it on the "working poor". Those who break their asses to keep a roof over their heads by working 2+ jobs without any kind of assistance. I would pay to have odd jobs done around their houses, get dental assistance for their families, and other things many folks take for granted. Nothing elaborate, just basic needs.
  • My parents get a new house, my wifes student loans go POOF! Wife also gets a 1970 Crazy Purple Dodge Challenger.
  • Prostitutes.
  • One $1M prostitute or ten thousand $100 prostitutes?
  • Open retirement accounts for all the grandchildren. Advisors have shown if you were to put $7,000 into and account for your kids (or grandkids) invested in indexed funds it would be worth over 2.5m at the age 62. How's that for happy retirement?
  • Donate it all to Saint Jude hospital for children. Most of us was born with a fighting chance, but not them.
  • Hookers?
  • Euthanize a few people for sure. Maybe neuter lol
  • Paying off my sister’s student loans, buying my dad his dream car, and buying my mom all of the Michael Kors bags she wants
  • Get my dad into a good retirement community.
  • I'd be walking around the homeless shelters, etc. and do the "hey man, you dropped this $100 bill". I'd also be tipping like mad for coffees.

Honestly, I'm surprised more people didn't drop lines about prostitutes. Only a few. Good for you guys. We're maturing! Also, we're going to need to check up on the guy who said he'd euthanize people. Very strange. Very strange, indeed.

The answer to this situation also isn't that hard. If you can't spend the money on yourself, then you dump it into properties and investments for your spouse and kids.

That way, you can indirectly benefit while making sure they really benefit. Is it a bit of a gray area and breaking the spirit of the debate? Sure, but it still counts.

I'd make sure there's a nice little nest egg for the kids and wife.

Also, $1 million doesn't go nearly as far as it used to. It's not generational money and could easily be blown through. Be smart. Be very smart. Let me know at David.Hookstead@outkick.com what you'd do.
