M. Night Shyamalan Thriller 'Old' Wins The Weekend Box Office

Theaters around the United States have finally started to open up to customers again with new movies and shows, and this past weekend, despite the summer temps, a number of people made their way to enjoy the theater again.

The winner this weekend was the new psychological thriller from M. Night Shyamalan entitled Old, starring Alex Wolff, Rufus Sewell, Thomasin McKenzie, Abbey Lee Kershaw, and Vicky Krieps.

The movie grossed a reported $16.5 million domestically this weekend, another win for Shyamalan who has been on a roll in the last few years, with Split in 2017 and Glass in 2019.

The $16.5 million gross isn't the best money that a new Shyamalan-directed movie has made by far. In fact, it's the lowest grossing Shyamalan film since the 1998 movie Wide Awake.

Shyamalan was able to make the movie a lot cheaper than most of his films. Other than The Visit in 2015, it's the first Shyamalan movie to be made for less than $20 million. It reportedly cost $18 million to make.

Coming in second for the weekend was Robert Schwentke's Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, an action thriller featuring Henry Golding as the beloved G.I. Joe character who becomes a ninja warrior.

Old is getting mixed reviews by those who have seen it. The audience 'Rotten Tomatoes' score is currently just 51% positive.
