HBO Drops Fascinating Trailer For New Robert Downey Jr. Series

Robert Downey Jr.'s new series "The Sympathizer" looks intriguing.

Downey is one of the best actors in all of Hollywood, and pretty much everything he touches turns to gold. This is the man responsible for an all-time legendary performance in "Tropic Thunder." Now, he's taking his talents to TV.

HBO describes the plot of the limited series as, "THE SYMPATHIZER is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren't over."

It's clearly not a traditional spy story, and the teaser makes that crystal clear. In fact, it appears like it might be a bit strange, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Robert Downey Jr. stars in upcoming HBO series.

People hoping for a serious spy saga like the "Bourne" movies or "Mission: Impossible" are probably going to be very disappointed. That's not the vibe of "The Sympathizer" at all.

It's clearly a dark comedy that is likely some kind of commentary on the Vietnam War. Seeing as how Downey doesn't really dabble in the woke nonsense, it should be interesting to see what he serves up here.

It's also worth noting the famous "Iron Man" actor plays several different roles in the movie - not just one. He's going full Mike Myers in "Austin Powers."

Will "The Sympathizer" be Robert Downey Jr.'s next great hit? Will it be a dud? Fans will find out starting April 14th on HBO. It certainly looks like it will be a unique ride. Let's hope it doesn't disappoint!
