I had someone point out this morning that this is our very first league night on a pigskin night and it hit me like a ton of bricks -- this is officially a new era for Thursday Night Mowing League. Typically, I work in the yard until dusk with zero intentions of turning on a television. I like to hear the birds chirp, especially the cardinals who live in the neighbor's pine trees. The male cardinal comes home every night as the sun is going down and just chirps away.
Tonight I have a special surprise for the cardinal --- PATIO FOOTBALL IS BACK, BABY! Tell your cardinal wife that it's margs & pigskin. Margs, chips/salsa, Joe Buck, Troy Aikman. Cowboys-Steelers. Hall of Fame game. Me, the cardinals, the dog, a beautiful night with temps that should be around 80 at kickoff.
It's so great to have football back and I'm talking football with fans. 2020 wasn't football to me. If you're just getting familiar with how Screencaps operates, I'm fueled by the fans. I built this franchise off the fans who make football so special. Last year ripped my heart out. I did my job, but it hurt to see stadiums completely empty. Joe & Troy did their best to make the games feel special, but it doesn't take a world-class psychologist to figure out that I was hurting inside.
Tonight that all changes. This weekend is going to be special for the NFL as the Pro Football Hall of Fame inducts two classes which include guys like Alan Faneca, Calvin Johnson, John Lynch, a guy you might've heard of by the name Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson, Tom Flores, Steve Atwater, Edgerrin James, Troy Polamalu, Harold Carmichael, Jimbo Covert, Donnie Shell, Bill Cowher, Jimmy Johnson and Steve Sabol.
It's time to flip the switch. It's football season.
• I enjoyed hearing from all of you who are interested in Tim in Texas's Gauntlet league where 8 guys draft all 32 NFL teams via $100 in fantasy money and then the guy with the most cumulative wins gets the pot. • Huge Screencaps fan W.B. in Colorado, who has to be the longest-serving fan going back what feels like 7-8 years, sent me the following message about his daughter on Wednesday:
My middle daughter was diagnosed w/what is essentially junior rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) a few weeks back (she’s 7). We spent a month in and out of Children’s hospital this summer until finally getting the right diagnosis and medication. She’s now almost pain-free and participating in an online kids club for kids with JRA. Today they had a guest speaker and it was Natalie Decker who shared she has had JRA since 2. She answered questions from the kids and is just a good example of overcoming health issues as a child. Now she’s a motorsports driver.
• Wednesday I heard from Scott K. in Missouri who had a question about Tim in Texas's Gauntlet. In a follow-up email, Scott wrote "Thanks again for the job you do.....with China buying our news publications and you know our TV networks-you and OutKick serve an incredible purpose for many of us."
I thought about what Scott wrote and then I turned on Good Morning America just as I was sitting down to write this and here's how they started the first 20 minutes of the program: Wildfires ripping through a small California town, COVID, an interview with Dr. Fauci and then I turned it off.
I prefer to think that people need a site to piss them off when necessary. I prefer to think people want a website to cut through the nonsense being pumped into the mainstream. I like to think OutKick readers don't want me to waste their time. I like to think OutKick readers want to start their days on high notes and have a laugh.
My method has worked for over a decade, so there's no stopping me now. It's fifth gear from here on out.
• Which one of you has an amazing college football tailgate? I'm ready to plan a trip. I want it to be a big game. I want the full atmosphere. I want to enter the belly of the beast and come out with stories. Off the top of my head, I've had amazing times at Nebraska, LSU, Alabama (in some flop apartment that was bulldozed for that $200 million condo building right outside the Bryant-Denny gates), West Virginia (the main parking lot is a zoo), Tennessee (on a house boat), Ole Miss (twice), Notre Dame, Florida State, Michigan and USC.
