'Dune' Director To Make Epic Nuclear War Movie: REPORT

"Dune" director Denis Villeneuve reportedly will be tapped to make a nuclear war film of epic proportions.

Villeneuve is fresh off the success of the second "Dune" film, which is widely considered an absolute masterpiece. Now, it appears he'll pivot to a much more realistic story.

Legendary Entertainment has secured the rights to "Nuclear War: A Scenario" from famous author Annie Jacobsen, and the plan is for Villeneuve to direct it following the completion of "Dune: Messiah," according to Deadline.

Denis Villeneuve reportedly directing nuclear war film based on Annie Jacobsen's book.

The plot of the book is described as:

Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have.

Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who have built the weapons, have been privy to the response plans, and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made. Nuclear War: A Scenario examines the handful of minutes after a nuclear missile launch. It is essential reading, and unlike any other book in its depth and urgency.

While I haven't read the book yet (it's on my list), I did watch every second of Jacobsen's Lex Fridman interview, and it's 100% worth your time.

She takes a very deep dive into how a nuclear war would play out, and I agree with much of her assessment. There are parts where I think she took a few leaps, but let's not get into the weeds.

Overall, it's a great interview every American interested in war and history should watch.

Furthermore, Villeneuve is an incredible talent, and is arguably the hottest director in Hollywood at the moment after the insane success of "Dune: Part Two."

A third film is on the way and then it appears this nuclear war movie will be what follows. My expectations are insanely high. He's the perfect man for the job, and I hope he does a great job of showing just how devastating and harrowing a nuclear war would be.

There's a great made for TV movie called "The Day After" that came out in 1983 that's probably the best nuclear war movie ever made.

Now, when will it come out? Not for years, and that should give us all time to read Jacobsen's book. Let me know what you think at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
