Is Anyone Going To The Movies This Memorial Day Weekend?

Heading to the movies this Memorial Day weekend?

Don't worry, you're not alone if you aren't.

In fact, 2024 has been an especially awful year for the Box Office, as so far not one single movie has had a $100 million opening weekend. To give an example of just how bad things are - one would have to go all the way back to last July's Barbie release to find a film that surpassed the opening $100 million mark.

That's uh, not great. But are we really that surprised?

Let me ask you this - with poor weather expected this holiday weekend in certain parts of the country - is going to the movies even in the equation for you and your family? Without Googling, can you name a single movie currently in theaters? Honestly, I know there's another Planet of the Apes movie out (because we really needed that?) and I can't name any other film off the top of my head!

BOX OFFICE HASN'T HAD A $100 MILLION OPENING SINCE LAST YEAR

The No.1 projected film this weekend is expected to be Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. During its Thursday debut, it brought in around $3.5 million. Weekend sales expectations have now been lowered to be in the $30-$35 million range. Deadline previously reported that the film would need to gross $440 million worldwide just to break even. LOL - good luck with that!

And there within is where the problem lies.

It's not that people don't want to go to the movies - we've proven we will, as shown with Barbie, Oppenheimer, or even the Taylor Swift Eras live concert movie. But for the love of buttered popcorn, can you at least give us something worth seeing?

ENOUGH WITH THE MARVEL MOVIES AND SEQUELS!

Hollywood and the Box Office have become so oversaturated with sequels, remakes or just weird movies in general that no wonder people aren't head over heels about having to leave the comfort of their living room couch to go to a mall (do those still exist?) and purchase a movie ticket. The fact that Marvel continues to spew out film after film about storylines and characters nobody gives a damn about shows just how clueless the decision makers are.

As I previously wrote, 2024 is the year of the sequel - with Dune, Mean Girls 2, Bad Boys 4, Gladiator 2, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Beetlejuice 2 and plenty more. How many of those do we really think are going to do well? The only one that I believe will do remotely well will be the upcoming Joker 2: Folie a Deux out of sheer curiosity about how they follow up the hit the first one was.

So far this year, Dune: Part Two had the highest grossing first weekend with $82.5 million.

With more people actually canceling streaming services these days because they keep rising in cost without delivering a consistent product worth paying monthly for, film studios have the opportunity to take some control back.

That is, if they just give us something worth going to see!
