College Football Makes It To Championship Weekend After Blue Checkmarks Worked So Hard To Cancel It

In a June 30 report on CBS Sportsline, Dennis Dodd wrote about the college football COVID death predictions from a University of Illinois computer science professor. Dr. Sheldon Jacobson made a huge prediction in that fear porn column from Dodd. "I guarantee someone is going to die," Jacobson told Dodd.

The computer science professor, using his projections based off CDC data, predicted college football would suffer 3-7 deaths among 13,000 FBS players.

"A few of them could end up in the hospital, and you'll have a small number who could die," Jacobson told Dodd. "I don't want to sugar coat it for you. I just want to give you the facts. … If everybody comes together under normal circumstances, we'll probably see that kind of outcome."

Yet, as Clay noted on Twitter this morning, here we are on December 19 on conference championship weekend and the SEC is about to finish off its season having played 69 of 71 scheduled games that have included fans and yet the FBS has avoided serious COVID issues and certainly not deaths like Jacobson predicted.

By early August, Dr. Jacobson was revising his numbers from 3-7 deaths suffered by FBS players to 0.59 to 1.68 deaths. "I've been watching the football programs around the country. They had their surge of positives and it stopped," Jacobson told CBS in August. "The players are highly motivated to follow the rules. If you follow the rules, based on our analysis, there are positive outcomes."
