Making Sense of Cam Newton's Bizarre Market

It's May 14, and Cam Newton still doesn't have a job. Imagine saying that just a few years ago when he was primed to be the face of the NFL. The complications of the offseason, the lack of interest thus far, and Newton's injury history make it difficult to confidently bet on his landing spot. But that type of thinking isn't going to get you a weekend in the Bahamas. Here are the odds, via FOX Bet, for you risk-takers:

The latest development comes from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler who says the Seahawks would be "open" to adding the former MVP. Technically, with the lack of reports suggesting interest elsewhere, Seattle is the safest bet. Though, Fowler adds the Seahawks wouldn't pay much for a backup quarterback. This is a bad fit for Newton, too. It's the equivalent of agreeing to sit out the season. There isn't a team in the NFL that Newton would have a lesser chance of getting playing time on. What's more, the Seahawks aren't good enough — like the Chiefs or Ravens — to lock games up by the fourth quarter and pull their star quarterback. Newton could be getting desperate. But this desperate? Not yet.

The Raiders are intriguing. It's one of the few teams where there's a definitive case Newton should start on. Derek Carr is a mediocre starter on borrowed time. Which doesn't cut it in glamorous Las Vegas. Newton's personality fits the atmosphere of the city. Also, the stories of Newton with Jon Gruden would give us the type of content we've long been searching for. I don't trust the Raiders enough to "take this bet to the bank," but it's hard to find a better one.

We'd all be down for New England to sign Newton. In fact, it'd be nice if Bill Belichick brought in any quarterback that we know at least something about. Yet, it doesn't seem likely. Belichick looks set on proving the doubters wrong and going with Jarrett Stidham. (With no viable competition, that is.) While the decision is incredibly lame, if it works, the type of tweets from Tom Brady stans will be a solid remedy.

A smart better will elect to wait until there is more known about Newton's health and the interest of the market. But a real go-getter looking to cash in is placing a bet this afternoon.

Las Vegas Raiders.
