Bob Stoops Retiring at Oklahoma; Lincoln Riley New Coach

Wow, just a casual college football bomb dropped right into a casual Wednesday in June.

I have several thoughts on this, but if you want to see me react to the news live on our daily Outkick Show, check it out below:

Here are four additional thoughts:

Can you imagine the reactions in Austin and Stillwater to this news? Sure, Lincoln Riley may end up being a good hire, but Bob Stoops was a great coach. I know, I know, he only won a single national title and he lost many big games, but he GOT TO THE BIG GAMES CONSISTENTLY.

Stoops went 190-48, that's an 80% winning percentage, which is flat out insane over that long of a coaching tenure.

Plus, he had an established recruiting pipeline, this really opens up the Big 12 for Gundy and Herman.

   2. Stoops retired in June with a Heisman trophy caliber quarterback returning next year.

That's never happened before.

Which makes me think there's something fishy about this decision. Notwithstanding his arrest, why wouldn't you want to coach Baker Mayfield for another year and then retire?

It's hard to believe this wasn't related to the Joe Mixon video going public.

     3. Stoops is only 56 years old.

That's incredibly young for a coach to voluntarily retire.

Nick Saban, for example, is 65 years old.

So will Stoops really stay retired or is he going to coach somewhere else again?

I'd bet on him coaching somewhere again.

     4. Will Lincoln Riley be up to the job?

This is a MAJOR promotion for Lincoln Riley, who is only 33 years old.

He graduated from college in 2002 and was born in 1983.

Hell, the guy is four years younger than me.

And we all know how mature I am.

Just absolutely wild news.
