Sun Take On Fever Once Again And We Have A WNBA Play

Fever vs. Sun, 7:00 ET
Another day another story about Caitlin Clark. I promise you this is about sports betting and not just her. I am actually not exhausted by the Clark coverage, I just think it is interesting that so many people pretend to be interested in it. In fairness, this is the third WNBA article I've ever written for Outkick, and all three have been games in which Clark is playing. That's not actually by design. Sometimes I just like to change it up after writing about baseball for so long. Today we will talk a bit more about Clark and the Fever as they take on the Connecticut Sun.
Last time I wrote, I shared my opinion about how the WBNA is stupid with the way they are handling Clark. Barstool Sports President, Dave Portnoy, just posted a clip recently expressing essentially the same thing. This time it was in relation to the Olympics leaving Clark off of the Women's National Basketball team for the Olympics. I actually disagree with Portnoy and most other talking heads. From a business standpoint, yes, it is stupid to have Clark miss the team. From a talent standpoint, who are you going to take off the roster? Every player on the team is better than Clark is right now. You're not taking Kelsey Plum or Sabrina Ionescu off the team for Clark. Jackie Young is more talented in many ways, and Diana Taurasi may be old, but she is still out there hooping and brings veteran leadership. That leaves Clark over Ariel Atkins or Jewel Loyd. Both are probably better than Clark, but I wouldn't have been disappointed to see her replace one of them. Clark is good, but it is possible she isn't quite the generational talent everyone seemed to label her as. The Fever only have three wins and have struggled both offensively and defensively. Now they have to face the Connecticut Sun who up until Saturday were unbeaten. This is the third time this season they will have faced the Sun. In the first game, Clark's debut, the Fever lost by 21. In the next matchup, the Fever kept it close, but allowed 88 points and lost by four.
The Sun are one of the three best teams in the league, just like they were last season. The problem for the Sun is that they aren't the best team, and they probably aren't the second best team either. Which means they are likely once again on the outside looking in for the WNBA Finals appearance. In all likelihood it will once again be a matchup between the Liberty and the Aces. There is still a lot of basketball to be played, but that's just the reality. Still, starting the season 9-0 is a good way to get your team going, and going 9-1 in your first 10 games of a 40 game year. While I don't think they will go 36-4, it is still a good start. The team is led by Dewanna Bonner, who is averaging 18.8 points per game and has led the team in scoring eight of their ten contests. I assume that they won't have her guarded by Fever star (and Olympic roster member) Aliyah Boston. If Boston does guard her, you can expect Alyssa Thomas to take over and be the primary scorer for the squad. They are a bad matchup for the Sun. Clark has scored 37 total points in the two games against the Sun, so they do need to try and find a way to slow her down a bit.
One thing that should be encouraging for the Fever is that Clark has led the team in assists every game. Her passing translates well to any level, and it does seem like she tries to get her teammates involved in the game. She has also put up 30 points in two games this year, including her most recent outing. This defense will be a lot tougher than that of the Mystics though. The Sun are probably going to rout the Fever here as they are coming off of that loss to the Liberty and should look to respond by getting back on track. I'm going to back the Sun's team total over 86.5 in this one as I don't know that they win by 13 or more, but do feel like the Fever won't be able to hold them under the total.
