Only Three College Hoops Games But We Have Two Plays

A short schedule

College basketball has been a large moneymaker for me this season. To be clear, it hasn't always been roses and sunshine. Last week wasn't terrible, but it wasn't pretty either. This week we've had a couple of 2-0 days, including yesterday, and a couple of 1-1 days. I'll take it. Tomorrow is the big day as College Basketball dominates the Saturday slate. There are just three games on the schedule for tonight, but that doesn't mean we can't find an angle.

Dayton vs. VCU, 7:00 ET

We may not have a ton of games tonight, but we still get some ranked teams playing. Dayton is currently ranked 18th in the nation and sit with a 19-3 record. They are also sitting at 9-1 in the conference. What conference do they play in? Great question, it is the A-10. I have to assume they will win it, but they are playing a good VCU team tonight. Dayton is 4-1 over their past five games with their only loss coming on the road to Richmond. In that game, they fell 69-64, so they were at least still in the game. Their other two losses this season came at the hands of Northwestern, a decent enough team. Dayton lost that one on the road as well, but it was respectable, and they only fell by five points. Their other loss came against Houston. That was a little more lopsided as they fell to them by 14 points. Outside of that, they've taken care of business. They've only played in five games decided by six points or fewer this season, so most of their wins have been relatively easy. Tonight won't be a very easy game. VCU doesn't have as pretty of a record as Dayton, but they've had a solid campaign at 15-8 and 7-3 in the conference. Their losses came at the hands of St. Bonaventure twice and George Washington. Two of their losses came on their home court which gives me a bit of concern as Dayton can come into this game and dominate them. VCU has four strong guards that lead their team, but only two of them are above-average shooters. This game is listed as a  pick'em, but to me, the pick is obvious. We take Dayton to win this game. I don't think they will have a problem against VCU who has struggled against teams in the conference and the majority of teams that have more talent.

San Diego State vs. Nevada, 8:00 ET

The other ranked team that has a game tonight is San Diego State. They are taking on Nevada on the road and looking to try and keep their march toward a MWC championship. San Diego State is currently sitting at 18-5 with a 7-3 record in the conference. Two of those conference losses have come in the past five games, and all three have come in their past seven games. The losses were… as you'd guess… on the road, which explains why they are a dog in this game. They fell at New Mexico and lost by 18. Then they lost to Boise State by one point and lost at Colorado State by eight points. None of these losses are alarming, but they aren't surprising either considering that college teams just struggle on the road, typically. Nevada has a nice record, but they've really struggled against their own conference. On the season they are 18-5, but four of the losses have been against conference opponents. They are also just 3-4 over their past seven games. Of those four losses three have been on the road, and one of them was against San Diego State. They lost that game by 12 points. Now they come back home and they are slight favorites. This is a huge sign from the books that they are the right side in my opinion. If they lost the last game by 12 and we saw that San Diego State was a four or five point favorite, I'd be questioning it a bit more, but they are getting 2.5 points. I think Nevada is the right side, but I'll pay a little higher juice and play the money line at -135.
