Back Giants To Take Down Mets On Tuesday Night

Mets vs. Giants, 9:45 ET
It was a beautiful day yesterday as I had just two articles, but shared three plays in them and walked away with a clean sweep. The bigger game was between the Blue Jays and Royals. The two squads squared off in Kansas City and I thought the pitching matchup would be the highlight of the game. In this case, I was correct as they kept the offenses in check most of the game and we got the under to hit for not only the first five innings, but the full game. Hopefully we can keep the good times going tonight as the Mets take on the Giants.
Don't look now, but the Mets are above .500! I'm sure you can probably read my sarcasm in that sentence, but after one of the most embarrassing years in recent history, I can't help but laugh a bit about this season's early success. The Mets are 3-2 over their past five, and took two of three from the Dodgers in their last series. They did lose last night to the Giants in the season opener 5-2. Their starter Jose Quintana did a nice job overall, but he allowed the Giants to chip away at him and allowed five earned runs over five innings. While the Mets and Giants have oddly similar offenses (at least statistically), New York has done a great job of pitching this season. The Mets come in with a 3.56 ERA and one of their best pitchers has been Luis Severino. Severino has been great all season, allowing just five earned runs over 21 innings. He does have a 1.38 WHIP which is slightly high and could be a reason to be concerned. However, he is coming off of a quality start where he allowed just five hits and no earned runs over six innings. The problem is that he has walked seven hitters over his last 11 innings. That is an issue that can catch up to you rather quickly.
If you read my work last season, you know there was something really interesting about the Giants. They were surprisingly streaky most of the season. They would go on a nice winning streak, then they would lose a bunch of games. Their offense would look strong, then they would go into complete droughts. This season is not going that way. Their longest winning streak has been two games, and their longest losing streak has been four games. They have basically alternated wins and losses since April 3rd. Tonight they have a chance to get a game closer to .500 as they have one of their better pitchers, Logan Webb, taking the ball. Webb is making his sixth start of the season, and he already has four quality starts under his belt. He had one rough start against the Dodgers, but aside from that he has been superb. In the one start against the Dodgers, he allowed five earned runs over 3.2 innings. In his other four, he has allowed five earned runs over 27 innings. His last start, against Arizona, was the best of the young season as he went seven innings and allowed just two hits to his divisional foe. Webb has been great against the Mets in his career with just 13 hits allowed over 73 at-bats.
The total for this game is a bit low, but you have two offenses that can get cold quickly. The other issue is that Webb is on the mound so you'd expect a fairly low amount of runs allowed from him. Severino has been strong so far this season, but I'm not sure if he will keep this up. As I mentioned, I feel like he is a ticking bomb that will eventually blow up due to the walks and hits he is allowing. I think rather than take on the total, I'm going to back the Giants. They haven't won many games back-to-back, but the way that Webb has pitched lately, the Giants should be able to win this game. I'll back San Francisco at -130.
