Back Blue Jays Against Hapless Road Rockies

Rockies vs. Blue Jays, 7:07 ET

Baseball is back for the weekend with a solid group of games squaring off. We have the Yankees taking on the Guardians, the Dodgers and Padres, and some other pretty cool matchups. In this article, I won’t lie to you and tell you I think the two teams are going to put on great baseball games, but I do think there is an opportunity to make some good money here. The Rockies may be one of the worst teams in the league this season, and the Blue Jays should compete for a playoff spot, but today we focus in on their game as they battle on Friday night.

Here is a pretty basic strategy for betting on or against the Colorado Rockies. Fade them on the road, play them at home… occasionally. I mean, feel free to fade them on the road whenever you want, but playing them at home won’t be very profitable either. It is just that they are slightly better at home than on the road. They opened the season with seven consecutive road games and went 1-6 in those games. Only one of the losses was by less than two runs. They are not a good club, and haven’t been good on the road as a franchise for years. Today, they send out Ryan Feltner to the mound. He has been decent for them in his two starts this season, going 11 innings and allowing just four earned runs. He has a strong 1.00 WHIP and has only allowed four walks on the season. Only three Blue Jays hitters have ever faced Feltner and they have gone just 1-for-9 against him.

The Blue Jays might as well be the Padres, just the Canadian/American League version. Toronto has a ton of talent, ownership seemingly is willing to spend money on them, but the results leave a lot to be desired. Sure, you can bring up that they play in the best division in baseball, but that is just one part of it. Collectively, the team tends to struggle, and although we are early in the season, and they had a tough road trip to start the year, they are only hitting .216 as a team. Today, they send out their Ace, Kevin Gausman, and if they want to get this season rolling, they need him to regain form quickly. Gausman looked fine against the Rays, going 4.1 innings and allowing just two hits, including one solo home run. In his next game, he couldn’t escape the second inning as he only went 1.1 innings, and allowed five earned runs on four hits, including two that left the yard. Some Rockies hitters do have experience against him from his time with the Giants, but I wouldn’t describe any of the hitters as overly successful.

I might have been a bit harsh on the Blue Jays in the last paragraph. It was a tough start to the season and I think the team should be a playoff hopeful at the very least. If this sample size was in the middle of the season, you probably wouldn’t notice. Being at home might be making the difference for this club. Getting to face the Rockies might be a good time for Gausman to get right too. I’ll back the Blue Jays to win on the run line and will continue to do so in most road Rockies games.
