Man Rams Car into Police In Attack At Capitol; Driver, Officer Killed

Officials say one officer was killed and another remains hospitalized after a man rammed a car into a barrier near the U.S. Capitol building on Friday.

Just before 1:30 p.m., the U.S. Capitol Police tweeted the agency was responding to "reports someone rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers."

USA Today reports the suspect was identified as Noah Green, 25, of Indiana — the official, who is not authorized to comment publicly, said the suspect also appeared to have ties to Virginia.

In an update provided by USCP around 3:30 p.m., officers said a man in a blue sedan rammed his vehicle into the North Barricade, striking two officers, before exiting the vehicle and running toward officers with a knife.

The statement says the Capitol Campus was immediately put on lockdown.

One officer drew their weapon and shot the suspect, USCP said in the statement. The suspect, who was brought to the hospital, died from his injuries around 1:30 p.m.

Acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said a statement that USCP Colleague Officer William "Billy" Evans died as a result of the "injuries he sustained following an attack at the North Barricade by a lone assailant."

She said he had been with the U.S Capitol Police for 18 years.

"He began his USCP service on March 7, 2003, and was a member of the Capitol Division’s First Responder’s Unit," the acting police chief said. "Please keep Officer Evans and his family in your thoughts and prayers.” 

U.S. Capitol Police said the thread has been cleared but the area remains a crime scene.

"The USCP has cleared the external security threat incident located at all of the U.S. Capitol Campus buildings, however the areas around the crime scene will continue to be restricted and individuals should follow police direction," said an email sent to Capitol Hill staff members, per USA Today.
