Fake 'BLM' Jersey Mike's Sandwich Fools A Lot of Fans on Social Media
We thought for a little while that even the sub industry got politicized.
Last night, comedian Yassir Lester posted a photo of a Jersey Mike’s statement saying it was changing the name of its popular BLT to the "BLM" to honor Black Lives Matter.
It turns out, Lester pulled quite the trick on the web. This morning, he tweeted it was fake.
This whole situation accurately sums up the country right now. Almost too much.
First off, it is so believable that a company would change the name of a sandwich to "BLM." I'll be honest, I woke up this morning, heard about this, didn't look it up, and didn't question it.
To make this even more 2020, it attracted some strong supporters who offered their props and bought gift cards (probably). Simultaneously, some Americans were about to switch to Subway.
We were about to get to a place where subs and choices for lunch were hot button topics. It used to be just "don't talk religion or politics." That list has now extends to sports, news channels, Twitter follows, chicken restaurants, jokes, Looney Tunes, the game of chess, podcasts, classical movies, music, cars, masks, vacations, and a bunch of other ridiculous topics. Actually, just to be safe, don't talk about anything with anyone anymore. At least not online.
The traction on the tweet was also hilarious. The fake statement has nearly 20,000 retweets and 100,000 likes. Lester asked why we aren't using Google anymore to fact-check. That answer is simple. Online users work backward now. The facts don't matter. Remember when the internet was determined to "cancel" Joe Rogan without actually looking up what he did? By the way, no one knows yet what he did. And we never will.
Hilariously, a good chunk of people are yet to find out the statement is fake. Especially those not on Twitter who heard the news from a relative. They are still cheering or fuming as we speak.
Today will be paradigm-shifting for sub-picking passion.
