Billy Owens Is Rumored To Be In The Running For Mets GM, Would Dominate Baseball If It Goes Down

Oakland A's exec Billy Owens to the Mets is creating some buzz and this pairing would annihilate any front office in baseball. Owens runs the cheapest franchise in the sport that routinely trades home-grown stars, but what if he didn't have to? Handing Owens an open checkbook would have the New York Mets dancing around their hometown rivals and they should do anything to make it happen.

FanGraphs shows the Athletics spent $100 million in 2020 and hasn't impacted their ability to compete whatsoever. They currently sit 5.5 games ahead of the second place Astros that would only grow with further investment. Part of what makes Owens next level is that he understands how to evaluate young talent. Even though Kieth Law ranks their current farm system 26th, turning projects into stars has become a habit in Oakland.

Unfortunately for A's fans, they also have a nasty habit for trading fan favorites like Josh Donaldson and Yoenis Cespedes. It's bad for building a fan base and it's awful for cashing in on World Series titles. Small markets like the Kansas City Royals have opportunities to win, but those windows are short lived. Smaller windows from a lack of spending limits the impact of a front office.

Give that head of front office $170 million to spend and see where a franchise like Oakland goes. That opportunity is available in Queens, New York that should make Billy Owens consider packing for the east coast. Owens will now be a player for talent on the free agency market and heavy spending always helped build farm systems.

Billy Owens impact

Steve Cohen empowering Billy Owens is like handing Jeff Gordon your stick shift Honda. He'll make you forget you were in a Honda Accord and that's that's what the Mets need. Mets fans need a GM and ownership that will make things less Met-sy and fix the culture.

No one is more qualified to burn poor leadership to the ground than the richest owner in baseball and the greatest executive in the game. Billy Owens has to be the move for the New York Mets.
