It's a huge day around here

It's the day when summer starts to feel like it's right around the corner. Today is the day I head over to the vocational school to get the 55 plants that I ordered for the garden. I know that might not sound like a huge day to some of you guys, but this is the moment where I realize I'm about to go on a 3-4 month bender of sitting on the patio listening to Yacht Rock on Pandora, watching the birds do their thing and enjoy the colors of the plants in the garden beds.

The older I get, the more I chase tranquility. I'm here chasing not having to be stuck inside a house listening to kids wrestle and scream at each other. That's why flower pickup day is so damn important around here. It's time to paint a picture in the yard to go along with my Yacht Rock. It's time to sip on those post-mowing Busch Lights as the day comes to an end.

The only issue this year is that I have tree limbs coming down in mid-May, so I'll have to be strategic with where plants are put in the ground. Guys, I'm in this huge outdoor strategy mode where I sit around when it's quiet and the kids have gone to bed thinking about when to order my dirt, when to go get sod for a small project, and ultimately when to get mulch. I know many of you are in a similar situation. Women plan out birthday weekends, vacations & holiday gatherings while we're thinking of that massive load of mulch being dropped in the driveway. That's what makes us tick.

So I'll get the flowers today, get my bags of soil to freshen up the pots and start knocking out this part of my master plan. Then tomorrow, I'm off to Cleveland to see the NFL crazies in the flesh for the first time since the Miami Super Bowl. What a huge week for a middle-aged dad.

• 40 years ago Tuesday, the Giants drafted Lawrence Taylor. Let that sink in for a minute. George Rogers went No. 1 to the Saints. My dad would probably say it feels like yesterday. There are some serious Anchorman vibes going on with the 1981 ESPN draft coverage which was in its second year of existence.

•  Elon Musk and Tesla now have $2.5 billion in Bitcoin, thanks to a few months of investing, according to new security filings. I don't know where this guy is going with his money and his cars, but I'm just sitting here wondering if I'll be able to afford a private Tesla jet ride to the moon in my lifetime. My kids will likely be able to afford coach tickets by the time they're ready to retire.

• The nerds came out to bash Clay for saying he'd never worn a mask outdoors. Was that really some crazy take? You know what's crazier? Lunatics riding bikes around town while wearing masks. I've seen it. It's even crazier than people driving around wearing masks. You're on a damn bike going 10-12 mph. The 'VID isn't a drone zeroing in on your eyeballs to inject itself into your system, weirdos. Anyway, good for the CDC for telling us it's ok to do what we've been doing.

• And finally, it's Kentucky Derby weekend, in case you haven't been paying attention. Louisville man Pat Forde is going to lose it when he gets a look at 15,000 people partying on the infield. A total of 45,000 people are expected to be there.
