You Gotta See This: Terry Francona Ejects An Umpire

Videos by OutKick

Indians manager Terry Francona pulled a classic “You can’t fire me, I quit!” move Friday night upon being ejected. After vehemently denying an eighth-inning call by umpire James Hoye, Francona was tossed. But before making his way to the showers, Tito returned the favor and threw Hoye out.

The play that set Francona off the rails was a double play with Cleveland and Kansas City tied at 1. Royals catcher Salvador Perez tagged two Indians base runners near third base, leaving both dugouts confused and Francona steamed. Despite being tossed by Tito, the umpire remained in the game with more fireworks soon to follow.

Though the controversial double-play ended a Cleveland scoring threat, Francona’s crew rebounded an inning later with a walk-off homer from Bobby Bradley. It was the Indians’ second walk-off in as many nights.

Following the game, Francona was in a decidedly better mood, but not yet ready to concede the eighth-inning double play, saying: “I think they got it wrong”.

Cleveland and Kansas City meet twice more this weekend before the All-Star break. Saturday evening, the Indians are expected to throw Cal Quantrill with the Royals’ Mike Minor taking the hill. FanDuel Sportsbook has Cleveland as -1.5 favorites. A line on number of ejections hasn’t been posted, but we’ll take the over.
