Yankees Setup Man Zack Britton To Have MRI On Sore Left Shoulder

The New York Yankees' pen may be in trouble, as Zack Britton is heading for an MRI on his sore elbow.

The lefty told trainers that he had some soreness in his left elbow during his most recent bullpen session, manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday.

Boone said that Britton “felt something” later that evening, despite the “successful” bullpen.

The injury could cost Britton the chance to pitch on Opening Day against the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Boone.

The good news is that Boone said that they do not think that the injury will require Tommy John surgery, so his ulnar collateral ligament is likely okay.

Britton may be looking to get his elbow healthy now, but he has also battled COVID-19 within the last two months, which has hurt his ability to prepare for spring training in Florida.

The Yankees picked up the 2021 option on Britton, which turned into a two-year, $27 million contract that will keep him with the Yankees through the 2022 season.

Britton is expected to be the setup man for closer Aroldis Chapman. With Britton on the shelf for the time being, the team could turn to youngster Lucas Luetge, who has thrown well thus far this spring.
