Well, What Do You Know? Newsom Announces California Back In Business

You know COVID-19 fears are plummeting when even California Gov. Gavin Newsom is announcing a return to business as usual. But that is precisely what Newsom did on Tuesday.

"It’s reopening day," Newsom tweeted. "No more social distancing. No more capacity limits. No more colors or county tiers. And if you’re vaccinated -- no more masks. It’s a good day."

Of course, Newsom also tooted his own horn about how California has administered "over 40 million vaccinations." But what do you expect from a politician?

Masks have remained a point of contention among workers in California, with employers and employees squabbling over whether face coverings are still needed if you've been vaccinated. But the CDC has indicated they are not, and Newsom has promised to sign an executive order this week on workplace mask usage "to clear up any ambiguity."

"California is turning the page on this pandemic, thanks to swift action by the state and the work of Californians who followed public health guidelines and got vaccinated to protect themselves and their communities," Newsom said in a news release last week. "With nearly 40 million vaccines administered and among the lowest case rates in the nation, we are lifting the orders that impact Californians on a day-to-day basis while remaining vigilant to protect public health and safety as the pandemic persists."

Per CDC data, nearly 72% of California adults and about 59% of all residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine. California was the first state to shut down due to COVID fears.
