Wayne Gretzky's Father, Walter Gretzky, Passes Away At 82

Walter Gretzky, one of the most likable and beloved figures in hockey, has passed away at the age of 82. His son, legendary former NHL player Wayne Gretzky, tweeted out a statement to share the unfortunate news on Thursday night.

"It's with deep sadness that Janet and I share the news of the passing of my Dad," Wayne's tweet said. "He bravely battled Parkinson's and other health issues these last few years, but he never let it get him down.

"... He was truly the Great One and the proudest Canadian we know."

This is a heart-breaking loss for the hockey world. The Gretzkys are the most recognizable family in the sport, and Walter Gretzky was the one who built the foundation of that legacy. That legacy extends well beyond his son's success on the ice, however.

He was a coach, a mentor and overall great man.
