Watch: Trey Lance Debuts With A Splash, Throws 80-Yard TD Pass

Fans didn't have to wait long for the first dazzling play by San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance. During Saturday's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Trey ripped off an 80-yard touchdown to former Vandy receiver Trent Sherfield — sending 49ers fans to head coach Kyle Shanahan's DMs, begging him to start the rook Week 1.

Trey's afternoon simmered though. He completed 5-of-14 passes for 128 yards and one touchdown in his debut. The small sample size from Lance still left fans satiated. By the end of the game, focused shifted from Trey's potential to the performance of a 49ers offensive line that surrendered four sacks on their future starting quarterback.

"It was super exciting. Kind of the moment you dream of scoring your first touchdown," said Lance in a postgame interview. "Even though it's preseason, it's pretty cool. With my teammates, the guys in that locker room, that they were so excited for me and for Trent making that play. It was for sure a special moment and I wish I could've capitalized on the opportunities that came after that."

Lance also praised his receiver for beating the Kansas City secondary down the field for the score. "But yeah, he made a great play, obviously, and set the angle perfectly. So, for me, it was one of those situations, obviously, where I want to get the ball in his hands."

Jimmy Garoppolo was spotted on the sideline celebrating the play and supporting the young QB during his big moment.
